19 October 2008 Panaji (PTI): The Hindu right wing organisations in the state have given a call for Goa bandh on Monday to protest the recent incidence of desecration of idols in the state.
Grouped under the banner of Mandir Suraksha Samiti, the organisations including Bajrang Dal and Hindu Jangaruti Samiti have flayed the state government for its failure to arrest people behind such acts.
Over 500 places places of religious significance were desecrated in the recent past.
"We appeal to the people to participate wholeheartedly in the bandh and make it successful," the organisers had said earlier this week during a press conference.
Goa government has taken the strike call seriously and promulgated Section 144 of CrPc prohibiting processions, demonstrations, bandh, strikes, road closures and forcible closure of shops and other establishments on October 20 between 6 am and 6 pm.
"We appeal people to desist from participating in the bandh. Government will provide adequate security to all the shops and establishments, which would not respond to the bandh," Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat told a press conference yesterday.
"These shrines are in the isolated places. There is a systematic effort to tamper communal harmony in the state," Kamat said.
